One winter headache a homeowner doesn’t need – and can take steps to avoid – is an ice dam on the roof. Ice dams can damage walls and ceilings and possibly trap moisture, which could lead to mold, mildew and respiratory problems.

Water damage is one of the most common types of claims reported. Ranging from toilet leaks to a sump pump losing power, these claims are costly and messy. However, there are ways to help reduce the chance of experiencing a loss:

        • Install a water shut-off system to detect unusual flow rates in your plumbing system and automatically turn off the water main to your home.
        • Purchase a battery back-up system on your sump pump to avoid costly losses during a power outage. Should you lose electricity during a storm, these systems will kick on, allowing your sump pump to continue to expel water.
        • Keep your thermostat on to at least 60 degrees, even if you are away from home. This will help keep your house warm and reduce the risk of frozen pipes.

In the event you have a water leak, turn off the water main supply and contact your plumber right away.
